There are two versions of the U.S. citizenship civics test. Find out which one you will take, so you study the right material.

The date you filed decides your test, not the date of your interview. If you filed before October 20, 2025, you take the older test even if your interview is much later.

How to find your filing date

Your receipt notice Form I-797C, the paper USCIS mailed you after you filed. It shows a “Received Date.” That is the date to use.
Your USCIS online account Sign in and open your case details. The date is listed there.
Your bank or card statement The day the filing fee was charged is close enough to tell you which side of October 20, 2025 you are on.

The test is spoken, not written

An officer asks you the questions out loud and you answer out loud. The officer stops as soon as you have enough correct answers to pass, or as soon as you can no longer reach the passing number. You will often be asked fewer than the maximum.

Some answers change over time

Questions about who holds an office — the President, your senators, the Speaker of the House, the Chief Justice — change with elections and appointments. Answer with the person serving on the day of your interview, not the name printed in an older booklet.
